The origin of ‘Shavuot’ (‘Pentecost’) in the Old Testament commemorates the day when the Ten Commandments were first given to the Israelites at Sinai. It also reflects the day that the Holy Spirit first fully indwelled in the New Covenant Church. Now, as the “Day of the Lord” draws nearer, we are again seeing revival throughout the whole of the church, as the days of the “latter rain” come upon us.

Halloween is the most magical time of the year, literally. It is a time when the spirit realm is nearest to our material world, when the barrier between them is at its thinnest, almost like “lifting a veil”. The historical aspects of Halloween and its relationship with the church, as well as Christian attitudes towards this “holiday” festival, are quite diverse. It marks the beginning of the New Year based on the lunar cycles of the calendar for many ancient cultures. It is also a pagan holiday observance as well. Hence the mystical qualities and ancient traditions that surround this unique time of the year. The Bible tells us that in the “latter days” the world will be experiencing a renewed awakening to these supernatural traditions. Are we in those times now?
There is a general lack of concern or apathy surrounding the observance of HALLOWEEN. This “holiday” festival which tends to be observed by most of the western world (also to include Christians) is deeply embedded in our social culture. Many people seem to treat this event as nothing more than an over-commercialized secular celebration and an excuse for our youth to dress-up anonymously and even purge some of their “wild oats”. Thus modern-day Halloween has been transformed into a time for having colorful masquerade parties and assuming alternate identities, binge on candy until you “overdose” on a sugar high, and revel in watching scary horror films or scream your lungs out at “haunted” attractions of the man-made variety. BUT – ARE HALLOWEEN FESTIVITIES REALLY THAT INNOCENT?
